iRobot Roomba 4210 Discovery Vacuuming Robot, White Review

iRobot Roomba 4210 Discovery Vacuuming Robot, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:
1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery
2. Difficult to clean
3. Noisy
4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.
1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.
iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.
2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.
3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.
4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.
I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. [...] I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.
Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.
Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.
I hope this helps.

Enjoy effortlessly clean floors with this vacuuming robot. The unit senses, finds, and eliminates dirt while automatically adjusting to any floor surface including carpet, wood, tile, and linoleum. The round-shape vacuum goes where others can't like corners and edges, then returns to its self-charging Home Base where it automatically docks and recharges between cleaning cycles. In addition to active dirt detect, a stair-avoidance system, surface transitioning, and a bagless debris bin, the unit offers three cleaning modes (clean, spot, and max) and a standard, infrared remote control. The vacuum also provides an Advance Power Supply (APS) battery, which enables up to 120 minutes of continuous cleaning time, and an APS fast charger that fully charges the Roomba in less than three hours. Two virtual-wall units, which use an infrared beam to create a barrier, come included for cleaning only where desired. Each virtual-wall unit requires two D batteries (sold separately). Other accessories include two Roomba filters, documentation, an owner's guide, and a cleaning tool. The vacuuming robot measures 16-3/4 by 21 by 5 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

This is my second Roomba and I love them. If you have hard wood floors and no time to sweep this is gold! Be aware that they still aren't perfect. It will get caught on cords, and try to kill itself with a lost sock. You will probably be replacing it in 2 years. That said I run mine twice a week and love it.

Cheaply made handle.
Handle is out of proportion to a bottom sweeper.
I am afraid that one of these days, this handle will crack.
to put it back together, you'll need a welder.
Up to date sweeper works ok on small jobs

Oreck Signature® Plus II Upright Vacuum Review

Oreck Signatureandreg; Plus II Upright Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My review is for the Oreck XL Pro Plus II from Costco. According to "best vacuum reviews dotcom", Costco's XL Pro Plus II model is identical to Target's Signature Plus II, and Oreck Direct's Element and XL Classic.
I furiously researched my first vac 15 years ago, a Sharp 12TW series upright that was library quiet and did a great job in a very basic package. It needed only a few minor do-it-yourself repairs over the years (parts off the internet), and in general my only complaints were the short cord and short hose. The motor finally quit and I figured it was time for a new unit. I'm wishing now I had a little more than my BlackBerry to research this purchase in the aisles of Costco, although, to be fair, the Costco.com user reviews are mostly stellar for this vacuum.
Let's talk about the good points:
+ The Oreck was extremely easy to assemble out of the box. Remove two screws and a plastic pull-tab, insert the handle, and re-install the two screws. Ready to go.
+ This vacuum is indeed lightweight. Oreck's comparison is their vac to a gallon of milk, versus their competitor to a tire off of a small car.
+ The cord is both long, and heavy duty. I noticed on my Sharp's too-short cord that it would become extremely supple after just a few minutes of use, most likely due to the gauge of wire they chose to use heating up as the current flowed. This is definitely a more suitable cord, especially for the long length.
+ Very maneuverable in that the vacuum head is narrow, so it easily goes between chair legs and around coffee tables, and gets farther under some low furniture because of its low height.
+ Unencumbered by attachments and dangling hoses. Very purpose-built, a machine for vacuuming carpets.
+ Super heavy-duty filtered bags. These things look like fluffy hand towels all folded up. Purportedly dust trapping, hypoallergenic. Not that I've ever had a complaint about my Sharp's paper-style bags.
+ Simple fabric bag bag. Er, that is to say, no overly complicated fancy-looking plastic body; no unnecessary parts to break. Just a fabric bag and a zipper. Simple.
That's all well and good, but now for the not-so-good points:
- Despite its light weight, I find it unnecessarily difficult to push around. The old Sharp has fairly conventional 2 or 2½ inch rear wheels and little tiny roller wheels under the brush, and rolls quite smoothly. This Oreck has tiny roller wheels all around, and is -- I don't want to overstate this -- a bit of a chore to push around on our very low-cut berber carpet. Maybe because the carpet isn't tacked down so well everywhere and is actually being sucked into this machine's brush? Maybe... or maybe just because of its teeny-tiny wheels! Whatever the cause, it's not as free-wheeling as its light weight might predispose.
- The edge suction is truly abysmal. The machine has two small edge brushes astride the roller, and these bristly protrusions to indeed grab tufts of pet hair if contacted. But half the time they deposit that tuft right back on the carpet a few feet later. For a vacuum with this much claimed suction, concentrated under such a small head, I'm baffled that this is a problem.
- It's noisy. It's not whiny loud like a $79 vacuum, or even like a commercial vac or Shop Vac, but compared to the "library quiet" Sharp it's replacing, the Oreck is noticeably louder.
- Worthless headlight. Honestly, why even bother with these? It's not like I stick the vac under the couch, then get down on my hands and knees to look underneath and see what it "sees."
- Narrow head. I know I listed this in the "plus" list, but it also means more back-and-forth strokes to get the same amount of carpet clean.
- No tools means no hose. My wife and I were both OK with no onboard tools or wand, but after using it she mentioned she misses being able to disconnect the hose and quickly dab at something or other with just the free hose end. The way this cleaner works is the suction goes right up the handle into the bag, so there is no hose to detach. You want that, you've got to break out their handheld unit.
- Awkward maneuvering from room to room. Missing those bigger wheels right at the rear of the machine, I guess this machine isn't intended to be wheeled around like a hand cart when just moving it around the house, as is the case with every other vacuum I've used. Not a deal breaker in and of itself -- due to its light weight -- but just one more tick on the "dislike" list.
I think, out of all the "cons" I've listed, the one most serious deal breaker is the poor edge suction. I'm pretty sure I could overlook everything else, even the lack of a hose. My old Sharp wasn't great on edges, either, but at least I had the option of pulling off the hose and sliding on the carpet brush for that type of detail work. If I end up keeping this Oreck, it'll be a two-pass job where I have to double back with the included handheld unit.
Update 4/16: After writing this review and the wife and I independently using and deciding we didn't like this vac, I decided to give it another go, rationalizing "it couldn't be *that* bad." I finished cutting one of the dogs, and true to form, he ran inside the house and shook just inside the front door. I got the Oreck out and vacuumed this fur-covered area first, generally satisfied with the results, then the living room and then one of the bedrooms, still noting my displeasure with the lack of edge suction. When I completed, I walked around and noticed the vacuum dropped random tufts of fur here and there. My suspicion is this is being caught up by the edge bristles, but never makes it into the machine, instead falling off at random places. Really unacceptable. I reluctantly boxed the Oreck up and returned it to Costco the following day -- reluctant because I really wanted this comparatively simple US-made product to work for my needs.

i bought this item at a Best Buy and it seemed nice with the swivel features and the cool colors. so i brought it home and let in charge for a day (after i assembled it). i tried it out. i love the removable mini vacuum. but the battery only lasts for about 15 minutes. and its contents fall out once you've finished vacuuming, which is quite unfunctional. i like this vacuum otherwise, but i decided to return it. :( hope this helped some of you decide.

This vacuum is, without a doubt, the best vacuum I have ever used! I had been searching for the perfect vacuum to suit my needs (every room in my home except the kitchen and bathroom has high pile carpeting); I also did not want to pay a small fortune. I found exactly what I was looking for in this vacuum. Please be aware though, that this is not a vacuum for everyone. 1)It is no lightweight, weighing in at 18lbs. (Who needs to lift weights? lol) 2)It has a shake out cloth bag (This is a BIG plus for me-- I dislike vacs with cups as I find they fill up too quickly in my large home, and I have always had a really hard time finding the right size paper bag for any other vac). 3)It has no attachments (easily remedied with the purchase of an inexpensive canister for edge cleaning and quick jobs). 4)It has a 50 foot power cord-- I LOVE being able to vacuuum most of the house without having change the plug! (though it takes a bit longer to wind up the cord). 5)Overall this vacuum is designed to do ONE job really well-- CLEAN CARPETS. (ie, don't try to clean hardwood or tile with it, but, for me, that is what my broom is for). No other vacuum I have ever used has worked this well (I have been trying friends' and family's for quite a while now, trying to figure out what I want, but now I think I'll stick with vacuuming my own house). Even my neighbor has commented on how much better my carpets look and feel. This is one powerful vacuum!

If you have pets, this product is your very best bet for cleanup. It kept my house clean through a new puppy, ferrets who come out to "play", plus our cats who occasionally flip more than litter out of the box. You can also spray around the base of your toilet to ensure that the area stays odor and bacteria free. We keep a bottle ready at all times at our house!
The processing and delivery was quick and hassle free. I'll buy it again!

The piece is basically a brush that collects all the hair on its bristles. I would say the brush is worth 2$ and that is all the product should be sold for. Germ Guardian GGLS11 Light Sweep with UV-C Sanitizing Technology Review

Germ Guardian GGLS11 Light Sweep with UV-C Sanitizing Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Germ Guardian Light Sweep is a piece of Chinese junk. Actually the device has some pretty good engineering. The belt driven agitator does a pretty good job of picking stuff up. It bogs down a little on carpet and has to be cleaned if you got somebody in the house with long hair. It even has a safety switch which prevents dummys from looking at the light unless they turn it upside down, turn on the power switch and then depress the safety switch. There are four led headlights which is cute but a waste of power unless you like to vacuum in the dark. The rechargeable battery allowed me to vaccum most of our 2300 sq. ft. house before it needed recharging. The dust container is made of flimsy plastic and a pain to get apart for emptying. I see that breaking first
The problem with this thing is that it was made as cheaply as possible and will not last long. It was made in China and companies like Germ Guardian just stick their name on it. I know of another company that has their name on it and charges 100 bucks for it.
I went to the Germ Guardian web site to look for support like replacement parts such as battery, brush roller, brush roller drive belt and dust container. Guess what? They no longer carry this thing and they didn't bother to respond to my three emails. That is certainly not encouraging. So when this thing breaks, and it won't be long, there goes 50 bucks.
This uv-c light concept in a vacuum cleaner is a new concept. The only other company that puts out a real vacuum with a uv-c light is the Halo for 500 bucks. And that vac is overpriced and, from what I can see, is cheaply made in my opinion. Also their repair part replacement availability is weak. They told me they were working on that department. I would avoid both devices as money is a factor. Being a janitor for 20 years and having owned numerous commercial vacuums I know what I'm talking about.

Quickly clean up dry messes on the carpet or hard-floor surfaces with this cordless, rechargeable motor-driven power sweeper. The unit's bagless, lightweight design includes a low-profile nozzle and a swivel head that make it effortless to maneuver around difficult corners, under furniture, and other hard-to-reach areas. It doesn't scatter dust like other sweepers, and the dirt cup simply slides out for easy emptying. Even more, the vacuum cleaner simultaneously sanitizes with the same UV-C technology that hospitals use. A UV-C light encased in the bottom of the sweeper provides a safe and natural way to help destroy germs and kill odors without having to use chemicals. The unit provides an extra-long 30 minutes of run time on a full charge, and its UV-C bulb will last 5,000 hours. A plug-in charger comes included, which fully recharges the sweeper in about 8 to 12 hours. The vacuum cleaner measures 11 by 6 by 36 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Eureka 4870DT Upright Vacuum Review

Eureka 4870DT Upright Vacuum
Average Reviews:

I've been using the SmartVac for over a month now. It is a great vacuum for the price. Some of the positives about it are: terrific vacuuming suction, clean air smell while vacumming, easy attachment system, and soft wheels for hardwood floors. I noticed that after I vacuumed my 15 year old carpets that I had to use force to close the doors since the nap had been raised so high. The rugs look noticeably cleaner and have a raised, fresh look. Negatives to the vacuum are the heavy weight, and the cheap plastic pedal that lowers the handle takes getting used to.
To address some of the comments made by others. The attachments all fit very snugly in their holders. You need to use enough force to "snap" them into place. I, too, thought the upholstery tool was loose until I realized that you need to use quite a bit of force to snap it into place. Once snapped, it won't go anywhere until you snap it out. For vacumming hardwood floors, you need to make sure that the vacuum is lowered to its lowest position and that the brushes are turned off. I also bought a small turbo head, a deluxe floor brush and a 10 foot extra hose. They work great together for cleaning under beds and for the car and furniture.
In summary, I think this is a great vacuum. For an extra $30 or so you can get some attachments that really make it work wonders. I now can leave it at the bottom of the stairs, while using the 20 feet of hose to clean all of the stairs and the wall, if I'm inclined! The suction is still very strong even with the extra hose. Hope this is helpful.

This product is the best stain remover I've found. I have a cat who throws up hairballs and the stain left behind is tough to remove. SPOT SHOT seems to dissolve the stain effectively. I spray it on the stain, leave it a minute, then rub the surface lightly with a clean paper towel. After that, I put the paper towel over the stain and press on it with my foot until all the product is soaked into the towel. Sometimes I have to repeat the process. It does leave behind a chemical smell that lingers for a while. It has never disappointed.

Electrolux Pronto 2-in-1 Stick Vac - EL1000A Review

Electrolux Pronto 2-in-1 Stick Vac - EL1000A
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this relatively pricey combo vacuum with the hopes of replacing two other devices: our cordless Dustbuster and corded Hoover Stick Broom. Unfortunately the Electrolux usually sits in it charger unused as it just doesn't perform well.
PROS: looks great, lightweight, very maneuverable around and under furniture, charging base has handy light that doubles as nightlight
CONS: very weak suction, clogs easily, design flaws for removable handheld, tends to scatter dirt instead of collecting it
We have 100% hardwood floors and tile/linoleum throughout the house, and our hope was to find a cordless upright that we could use for quick jobs of sucking up pet hair and dirt around entryway doors, etc. At first glance the Electrolux seemed the perfect fit: it was cordless but could be used on floors without having to bend over, and for tight spot jobs the removable handheld unit would negate the need for our Dustbuster. Unfortuntely it just doesn't perform well at all. Even for light hair and dirt jobs the upright clogs far too easily. There is a piece of flexible tubing leading from the bottom of the vacuum to the handheld unit (the handheld snaps into place near the base and actually does the suction), and the angle of this narrow, flexible tubing is about 90 degrees and the smallest leaf or twig causes a clog. If the tubing is completely clear the suction is decent enough for very lightweight sweeping, but even at that point the spinning brush in the base of the upright unit tends to throw small debris aside before the suction can pull it up into the bag (for example, I've tried using it to clean up light amounts of stray litter debris around the cat box but it tends to just throw the litter around the floor instead of sucking it up). I find that compared to the Hoover I have to go over the same floor area with several more sweeps to and fro to get all of the hair and dirt.
Other annoyances include the inability to empty the dirt collector without removing the handheld from the upright. Also the handheld power button will not stay in an On position without holding it tightly with a finger or thumb (when using as an upright the power will stay on by itself). The mouth opening of the handheld is also much smaller than your typical Dustbuster and even for small jobs takes several more sweeps back and forth to collect the same amount of dirt of just a few sweeps with a Dustbuster.
So overall I find myself using our two older vacuums and even going to the added trouble of putting an extension cord on the Hoover to do general house vaccuming instead of even bothering to pull the Electrolux out of its stand. Even though it's cordless it just seems to take longer and more effort to get the same amount of work done. It's basically not much more than an expensive nightlight for our laundry room. I really wish I had the good experience with it I seem to see other Amazon users reporting, but alas I cannot honestly say I feel this device delivers anywhere near what it promises.

Dyson DC17 All Floors Review

HOLY COW is all I could say after using it for the first time. The amount of "stuff" that came out of our carpets was astonishing. I also feel like I got a great deal on it, on sale for $299 at best buy. That was about the maximum of my price threshold having never seen one in action. Well let me tell you at $499 it would have been a good deal based on how much suction power this thing has. I feel so fortunate to have gotten one for such a good price.
After reading some reviews and product comparisons I decided on the DC17. We needed a new vacuum as our old one was around 8 years old and a lately it seemed to suck at sucking. We have 2 kids and a Labrador Retriever who are constantly tracking dirt and such into the house as well as the animal hair and dander...OMG the amount of hair and dander was astonishing...the carpets after one vacuuming were noticeably cleaner and looked to my wife and I as if they had been steam cleaned.
The only problem with getting this vacuum is that we are now aware of the filth that was residing unseen in our carpets for all those years and the shame that accompanies it is almost unbearable...but persevere we must!!
One note that I read elsewhere and again in the documentation was not to use carpet fresh powder or things like it.

These bags are worth the price. I removed the carpet from my home and installed darkly stained hardwood floors. I quickly learned that my vacuum, which I've loved for years, would not be the best way to clean/maintain my new hardwood floors. So, I started to research. Do you know how hard it is to find a GOOD vacuum cleaner WITHOUT a beater brush and that is designed NOT to scratch floors? Let me tell you, it's hard! These vacuum bags work perfectly for my Rafaello Donatello vacuum cleaner. I can only recommend this style and brand! It's light weight and it works flawlessly.
